Board
/ Staff Development Workshop
What
type of a board does your organization have? Does your board govern
and focus on broad
policies, or is
it a board that micro-manages
the staff and the work of your committees? Does your board
suffer from “Founders Syndrome?” Are decisions made by
the “secret
committee” and then presented to the board for approval?
Is there evidence of “Group Think?” Are your professionals
setting policy and volunteer leaders trying to implement policy?
Are your board meetings focused and productive, or do they
go on forever with the “tachlis” frequently dealt
with in the parking lot? Do you have “dominant” board
members who frequently “hijack” the session to
meet their own needs or force through their agendas? Are real
decisions made at
your meetings, or are they dominated by committee reports and
show and tell? Is your board still fumbling with “Roberts
Rules of Order?” Are there clear expectations of board
members and professional staff? Are the vision, mission statements
and
bylaws of your organization current and do they relate directly
to your organization’s programs, activities and actions?
Is there a sense of a power struggle going on between older
and younger leaders? Are your processes clear, in place, and
working
well? How well does your professional staff share the vision
with the board?
Our customized Board/Staff workshop is divided
into three modules. Module One is for the professional staff
to identify the strengths
and opportunities for growth; Module Two is for the board to
identify their strengths and opportunities for growth, and
Module Three
is designed to bring the staff and board together to clarify
goals,
roles, relationships and procedures. This results in an on-hands
development of an action plan for governing and running your
organization.
