Vision and Mission Statements

The creation or revision of vision and mission statements is one of the most important tasks and duites of a Jewish communal/synagogue board. These statements help clarify the philosophy and total environment within which the organization operates.

It is important to embark on a step-by-step process that acknowledges the organization’s past history while focusing on current and future needs.

What is vision?
An organization’s desired future.

What is a vision statement?

Through a vision statement a synagogue or Jewish communal agency defines its ultimate motivation, its dreams, its image of a desired future. A vision statement describes the ideal situation if the organization could fulfill its utmost wish.

Some examples:

" Members of our congregation will be knowledgeable and experienced on the key practices involved in Jewish life cycle events.”

" Our shul will be known as the most friendly and warm congregation in the entire Chicago metropolitan area.”

" We will be recognized as the best Jewish Communal Educational Bureau in the USA."

What is mission?
Why you do what you do; the organization’s reason for being, its purpose. Says what, in the end, the organization wants to be remembered for.

What is a Mission Statement?
A mission statement defines your organization’s purpose, philosophy, and values.

Why do we need a mission statement?

Every synagogue and Jewish organization needs to define its fundamental purpose, philosophy, and values. The mission statement clarifies the reason for the organization's existence. It describes the needs the organization was created to fill and answers the basic question of why the organization exists. Without guidance, it is difficult to establish programmatic priorities.

The mission statement provides the basis for judging the success of the organization and its programs. It helps to verify if the organization is on the right track and making the right decisions. It provides direction when the organization needs to adapt to new demands. Attention to mission helps the board adhere to its primary purpose and helps during conflicts by serving as a touchstone for every decision. The mission statement can be used as a tool for resource allocation. A powerful mission statement attracts donors, volunteers, and community involvement.
